• congential fusions of the bones of hte foot may be undetected until child begins participation in sports

  • most common: bony/cartilaginous bar b/w calcaneus and navicular bone

  • 2nd most common: calcaneus and talus

  • Calcaneocuboid coalition least common

  • Often family history

  • adolescent may present with midfoot pain, after recurrent sprain, repetitive running and jumpting

  • pain assoi with limp

Examination

  • restriction of subtalar joint motion

  • rigid flat foot deformity

Investigations

  • XR @ 45deg oblique to foot may confirm diagnosis

  • if normal and clinical suspicion remains: CT/MRI

Treatment

  • Orthotic

  • Surgical excision may be necessary
