Intussusception

  • sudden onset severe colicky abdominal pain

    • intervals \~15min

    • lasting 2-3 mintues

  • telescoping of segment of bowle

    • iliocoecal
  • usually idiopathic

    • can have pathological lead point (4-12yrs)

      • polyp

      • Meckel diverticulum

  • M>F

  • 3mo-2yrs

  • birth - school age

  • “redcurrnat jelly (60%)

  • USS = diagnositc maneuvre

Acute appendiciits

  • may occur at any age

  • uncommonn \<3yo

  • vomiitng in 80% of children

  • diarrhoea in about 20%

  • temp only usually slightly elevated

  • high CRP >50 = feature

Mesenteric appendiciits

  • localisation of pain and tenderness is not as difinite

  • rigidity less of a feature

  • temp hgihger

  • anorexia, nausea and vomiting lesser features

  • lasts 5d followed by rapid recovery
